These HEARTS were made for WALKING!

For the 2nd year in a row, Bruner has teamed up with Elford to join over 30,000 people at Columbus Commons on the morning of Saturday, August 23rd to participate in the 2014 Heart Walk.

8:30 a.m. Opening Ceremonies
9:00 a.m. Official Start of Heart Walk

Last year, Team Bruner walked in memory of Bobbi Newman, who suddenly passed away months before the walk. This year we’re extending that support to Elford, as they’ve recently lost Greg Keener, a member of the Elford family, to a sudden heart attack. Being so closely affected by heart disease, our team will take a stand against heart disease and help make this event a great success. This year Team Bruner walks in special memory of Bobbi Newman & Greg Keener and dedicates our 2014 walk to each and every Bruner or Elford employee who has been affected by heart disease.

The Heart Walk, the American Heart Association’s signature community event, is a fun, family event and a great team building opportunity where participants of all ages join in a noncompetitive 1- or 3-mile walk to generate passion for the cause and raise funds for lifesaving heart and stroke research. With over 20 of us representing Team Bruner at last year’s walk, we had a BLAST and surpassed our fundraising goal by raising over $4,000 to help the American Heart Association build a healthier community and put an end to our country’s No. 1 killer.

Team Bruner’s 2014 goal is to raise $5,000 and have 25 walkers join Elford on August 23rd! We hope you will get involved however you can by:

  • joining the team
  • making a donation
  • inviting friends and family to walk with us
  • sending a few emails to ask for a donation

Every little bit helps! All of Bruner’s fundraising efforts will feed into Elford’s team goal of raising $15,000.

2013 Bruner Team

Check out Bruner’s company page to join the race or make a donation today! We encourage you to invite family and friends to join as well! There is no registration fee for this heart healthy event, but if you can’t make it to the race, please consider supporting the Bruner Team by making a small donation. All you need to do is select “join team” next to our company name. Once you have registered, I encourage you to personalize your heart walk page, make a personal donation or reach out to friends and family for support.

Someone dies from a heart attack every 38 seconds and heart disease kills more people than the next 5 leading causes of death combined; together, we can all make a difference and fight these deadly diseases.

CEM in the House!

John Herold, Project Manager, is officially a Certified Energy Manager (CEM)! John is part of Bruner’s Performance Solutions Group, that works to optimize HVAC service plans, conduct energy master planning, and make efficiency improvements to client facilities.

The CEM designation, accredited through the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE), is the most widely recognized energy management certification in the world. Bruner currently employs three energy professionals that hold the CEM certification, with John being our newest CEM, and one professional that holds the Energy Manager In Training (EMIT) certification.

*The EMIT certification is for energy professionals that demonstrate the technical strengths needed to hold a CEM certification, but need more field experience.

Energy professionals that pass the CEM exam have a high level of knowledge and experience within the energy industry. Herold, having over 15 years of experience in this industry, has always worked to provide efficient solutions for clients. We are very proud of his achievements and new certification—great job, John!

AEE has been a leader in developing Energy Managers for over 30 years and Bruner is proud to be a partner. AEE describes the CEM designation as “an individual who optimizes the energy performance of a facility, building, or industrial plant. CEM® is a systems integrator for electrical, mechanical, process and building infrastructure, analyzing the optimum solutions to reduce energy consumption in a cost effective approach. CEM’s are often team leaders and help to develop and implement their organizations’ energy management strategies. CEM’s have gained increased recognition within the energy industry and by companies looking to strengthen their competitive position by having a CEM on staff.”

Employee Spotlight: Dan Spurgeon

Dan Spurgeon is Bruner’s Service Operations Manager.

“I love the people I work with and I really enjoy learning from them,” he said when asked about his favorite part of the job. For the past ten years, Dan has been working with the Bruner service group ensuring that customers experience the best we have to offer.

When Dan is not at Bruner, he enjoys spending time with his family, coaching baseball, and picking up projects. Whether those projects are related to his car or something around the house, he likes to keep busy. Dan also keeps busy by participating in an Elvis tribute band and original rock bands around Columbus. The Bruner team is happy to have such a talented musician and family-man around the office.

Dan’s Favorites:

Food: Toss up between a PB&J sandwich and Gatto’s pizza and salad
Sports Team: Cincinnati Reds and the Buckeyes (basketball/football)
Vacation Spot: Maui or the mountains of Vermont
Color: Green
Day of the Week: Fridays
Season: Whichever one is next—he likes them all… for a while
Holiday: Christmas is great with kids

Meet Bruner’s Service Estimator Team!

Similar to our employee spotlight that we have each month, this month we will be highlighting two of Bruner’s service estimators – Lowell McElroy and Steve Price. Both Lowell and Steve estimate equipment repairs for the service department based on site visits, call-in business, and preventative maintenance or service call recommendations from a technician’s suggestions. They have also worked with engineers to help strategize for job preparation and execution. Let’s dig a little deeper in to each of their individual fun facts!

Lowell McElroy:

Lowell is going on his 14th year here at Bruner, and his favorite part of the job is that most days are different and he gets to meet and talk to new people. In his free time, he enjoys a little R&R, travel baseball, boating, and spending time with his family and friends. When it comes to food, he “likes it hot!”. Lowell cheers for the Steelers and his favorite season is fall. Surprisingly, his favorite vacation spot is home, but he also enjoys traveling to Tennessee and on occasion the beach.

Steve Price:

Steve has been with Bruner for 4 years, and his favorite part of the job is that it has allowed him to morph into many roles. Another aspect that he enjoys are the great co-workers that he gets to work with every day. Steve is currently enrolled as a full time student as well, working towards earning a degree in psychology. While he has been in customer service positions for half of his life, he can’t wait to get into psychology because it is something that has always been a dream of his. Steve’s favorite sports team is the Ohio State Buckeyes, and his favorite day of the week is Saturday. Lucky for him, his favorite holiday is just around the corner as it is Halloween. On a final note, Steve believes trust is an important value and is sure to instill this in is daughter as he watches her grow up.

We’ve got an Excellent Leader on Hand!

John Sleeper, Vice President of estimating and Pre-Construction here at Bruner Corp, recently completed the Builders Exchange Executive Leadership Excellence Experience (BXLX) officially becoming a member of the BXLX Class of 2012. The BXLX is a nine-month program for senior level executives in the commercial construction industry offered by the Builders Exchange of Central Ohio. This year, Sleeper was among 20 participants in the program.

When asked why he would recommend BXLX, Sleeper responded “This was an excellent opportunity to continue to learn new things from people with a variety of different experiences throughout the industry and the business world in general. It also offers the chance to connect with peers and competitors throughout the local industry.”

BXLX is supported by a grant from the Builders Exchange Foundation and offers education and coaching by nationally-recognized experts in construction leadership and business development. Bruner Corporation is a long-time member of the Builders Exchange of Central Ohio, a trade association serving the local commercial construction industry with 800 member firms.

And the Award Goes To…

The BX Craftsmanship award judges met recently and selected nine individuals to be honored with a 2012 BX Craftsmanship award, and Bruner’s Doug Linnabary was one of the nine who received it! We would like to congratulate Doug and his team on the high-quality work that they performed on the Project Noble Data Center. Specific to the award, Doug was recognized for the installation of HVAC piping in the mechanical room and CRAH gallery at the Project Nobel Data Center.

Since 1964, the BX Craftsmanship Awards Program has recognized the importance of craftspeople for the quality work they provide to the local construction industry. The Craftsman recipients were selected from 29 nominations of work completed throughout the Central Ohio area during the past year.

We are proud of Doug, and expect his hard work and success to continue to be awarded in the future.

Employee Spotlight: Doug Linnabary

Dough Linnabary has been with Bruner since March of 2006. Currently working under the title of Job Support, Doug looks over the daily progress of job sites, creates schedules and makes sure they are carried out, over-sees and approves fabrication, and schedules materials and equipment. According to him, he is “basically the chief cook and bottle washer”.  His favorite part of the job thus far is seeing Project Noble come to a close. Project Noble has been very challenging to Doug in many ways, too many of which to list. Doug’s always liked completing a goal with his workers and standing back and being proud to put Bruner’s name on it.

Outside of Bruner, Doug likes to spend time with his family. He is very close to his four children and wife of 28 years this September. He isn’t quite sure “how she has put up with him this long”. He is also politically involved in the community that he lives in, loves to hunt, fish, water and snow ski, go boating, garden (not just flowers, vegetables too!), go motorcycling, and also work with wood. His favorite food is a traditional German dish called Rollauden. When asked what his favorite spots team was, he responded “the Browns of course”. Doug’s favorite vacation spot is Boone, North Carolina. His favorite colors are green, blue, and orange and specifically in that order! Finally, Doug’s favorite day of the week is “any day above the dirt”.

Another spotlight complete on one of our hard-working, trustworthy Bruner employees! Does Doug sounds like someone you would like to work with? Check out our career page for the latest openings and apply today if applicable.

A Closer Look at One of our Project Coordinators: Micah Alexander

Working for Bruner for 13 years, Micah Alexander holds the title of Project Coordinator. She considers herself a “concierge” because she helps with all projects here at Bruner, ranging from small to large. Because of her role, her favorite part of working for our company is that she never knows what is going to happen when she walks through the door in the morning. This exciting uncertainty is a good thing for Micah because it prevents her from ever getting bored with her job. She also firmly believes that you can do anything you put your mind to, and tries to be a walking example of that every day.

Outside of Bruner, Micah loves to swim at her local gym. She says that it “gets rid of a lot of stress” which helps her relax. Her favorite food is simple, as she enjoys cheese pizza. The sports teams that she cheers on the most are any teams that her sons play on. Along with her love of winter, coincidentally her favorite holiday is Christmas. When she takes time off for vacation, Micah’s favorite spot is the internationally renowned major resort city for gambling, shopping, and fine dining—Las Vegas.

Employee Spotlight: Kirk Wilson

Kirk Wilson is currently Bruner’s Computer-Aided Design (CAD)/ Building Information Modeling (BIM) specialist and has worked for us for 6 years. As a member of the CAD department, his primary responsibilities include conducting and managing BIM/VDC coordination and practices, along with fulfilling other CAD and project presentation needs. Kirk’s favorite part of his job is being able to work on a project team assisting others in order to make the project successful. Additionally throughout the six years that he has been with Bruner, Kirk has always enjoyed seeing buildings and other objects coming to life from an empty piece of land.

When he’s not on the job, Kirk enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, and working on home projects. Also in his free time he cheers on the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Cleveland Browns. His “absolutely favorite” foods are steak or chicken on the grill. His favorite vacation destinations are Florida and the Caribbean.  His favorite day of the week happens to be Friday, and finally his favorite holiday is the 4th of July.

Glenn Hagler Enjoys Customer Focus

Glenn Hagler

Glenn Hagler isn’t one for titles, but when he has to have one, he’s the Director of Business Development for Bruner. That means his job is to help our customers identify and quantify the value of their energy efficiency opportunities. “I get to help them save money and the environment,” Hagler said. He enjoys getting to focus solely on our customers. “When we do it right – and we normally do – we help them improve their facilities, reduce their energy consumption, and develop a trusted, long-term partnership with Bruner.” Despite all the great work he has done with our customers thus far, Glenn still considers himself “the new guy,” having only been with the company for less than one year.

,p>When he’s not working, Glenn likes to play tennis and golf, but he really cherishes the opportunities to watch his kids compete and succeed, whether the competition is in sports, arts, or academics. “It’s all good!” Glenn said – a saying that rubbed off on him from close colleague Eric Kuns. Glenn also enjoys football Saturdays when he can watch the Ohio State Buckeyes, indulging in desserts, and vacationing at the beach.

Glenn also shared a story with me regarding the dog he bought for his children and nearly killed in a headstand accident, but I’ll leave out the gory details.
